Zizania

These hardy, aquatic annuals, commonly known as Wild Rice,are native to China, Japan and North America. These beautiful Grasses are great for decorating the margins of lakes, ponds and water gardens. Z. latifolia can grow up to 10 feet high in the wild, but only grows up to 4 feet high when grown in containers, in the water garden. This variety produces greenish-brown flower panicles in the summer and turns yellow in the fall. Zizanias are very vigorous growing plants and will usually reseed themselves and germinate the following spring. POTTING: Grow Wild Rice in 5-gallon or larger containers filled with regular soil and set in water that is up to 2 inches over the plant's crown. They should have full sun exposure.


Propagation


In autumn, collect seeds for the next year's plants. The seeds should be stratified before sowing.
